Online exhibition: ‘‘170.000 b.p. at Poggetti Vecchi. Neanderthal and the elephants in Maremma, Tuscany. A climate challenge’’

The comprehension of the mechanism behind the climate crisis and its effects on the environment, economy, and society is becoming crucial these days. To better understand and interpret this phenomenon, it is essential to investigate the man-environment relationship since the ancient prehistoric times by verifying how the earliest communities interacted with their ecosystem and how they reacted to its changes.
This Institute’s project aims to present the exceptional case study of Poggetti Vecchi (Grosseto). It is an archaeological site dated 170,000 b.p. frequented by Neanderthals and ancient elephants. The online exhibition makes it possible to go back in time, from the excavations that brought to light a particular ecological niche to the discovery of the oldest wooden artifacts ever produced in Italy. The exhibition is realized by the Italian Institute of Prehistory and Protohistory in collaboration with the Soprintendenza of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Province of Siena, Grosseto, Arezzo, with the contribution of the Fondazione CR Firenze.

The online exhibition is free and can be visited every time and everywhere, on the mobile by using the app Artsteps or on pc by clicking HERE.
